The latest diet “fad” to surface will hopefully never be a fad. The diet is a whole foods diet and the idea is eating food as Mother Nature created it. These days, all you have to do is look at the label of most foods you find in the supermarket and you’ll be lucky to recognize a handful of things in a long list of ingredients. Poly and hydrogenated this. It’s all very unfamiliar and confusing.
So what exactly are whole foods? These are foodstuffs that have not been tampered with. They are a natural, raw product of nature. They are free of additives or colorings. Whole foods are seasonal foods, being taken from as close to their source as possible, and are not preserved.
In the world of processed foods, disease abounds. We’ve all read about how certain intact cultures (Mediterranean and East Asian) seem to live longer and have fewer bouts of heart disease, obesity, and cancer (all diseases often linked with eating habits). But why is this? The reason could be that diet still has deep roots in traditions and beliefs, keeping a way of eating intact. Additionally, wealth (or lack of it) can be a factor. As a culture becomes wealthier, they can afford more processed, convenience foods.
How can you adapt your lifestyle to incorporate a healthier, whole food diet into your day-to-day living? First, look at labels before you buy. If you don’t recognize many (or any!) of the ingredients, look to see if there is an alternative with more natural, whole foods. For instance, instead of buying instant oatmeal, that has added sugar, flavoring, and sodium (yes, sodium!), buy steel cut oats. Add your own whole flavorings, like a sprinkle of cinnamon and honey. You will probably even save money in the process. |

Second, purchase fruits and vegetables only in season. This way, you will be getting the freshest, most flavorful foods and you won’t be tempted to buy canned or frozen. Apples, pears, and many root vegetables (like potatoes, parsnips, and carrots) are in season or soon will be. Again, you will save money by buying what’s in season!
You can also “shop the perimeter” of your local grocery store. What does this mean? Think about your grocery store…all the fresh ingredients are on the outside walls: bakery, deli, butcher, fruits & veggies, and dairy. Shop those areas first. They should comprise the main ingredients of your cooking, with good fats, such as olive oil, and spices used as important additions to dishes. The inner part of the store should be limited shopping: this is where cookies, chips, sodas, etc are located.
Last, think about what you are putting ON your body, not just what’s going into it…SanRe Organic Skinfood uses ingredients that Mother Nature created to make skin care products that are healthy for you and the environment.
