It seems like everyone these days is jumping on the organic bandwagon. That’s a great thing, except when a company’s products claim to be organic, but actually are not. What is a savvy consumer to do? The labels are all so confusing with manufacturers trying to capitalize on this new desire for natural products. Of course you’re told to read the ingredient label, but if you don’t have a background in science and chemistry, this will get you nowhere. So if a lotion says it’s organic or paraben-free on the label, you may never be able to check the claims against the contents. The scientific names for chemicals are the only way ingredients can be listed because that's what they are. To determine whether the product you are buying is truly organic, here are some items to look for while shopping.

So, all these chemicals are going onto your skin and into your bloodstream. What should you be on the lookout for?

PRODUCT PACKAGING
Don’t let the packaging deceive you. Pictures of leaves, the sun, and fruit don’t mean the product is all-natural. Look at all the product packaging to read about any disclaimers that were written in small print. And just because a company has the word “organic” or “natural” in their name, that doesn’t mean the product is good for you. Look past the hype for some key information to help you separate fact from fiction.

SELECT INGREDIENTS
You may read on a product’s ingredient list that they use organic lavender oil. That’s great, but what is in the rest of the product? Don’t be deceived by the claims of one or two minor ingredients being organic. Read the whole list and be wary for any items in the list that are on the list of ‘chemicals to avoid’, like parabens.

Also be wary of ingredient lists that list a chemical name followed by “derived from palm oil.” Don’t assume because an ingredient is a derivative of something natural that the ingredient itself is natural. Many of the processes that ‘derive’ an ingredient into something that is usable in a cosmetic are still toxic, producing the ingredients that are bad for you.

THE INTERNET
When all else fails, it’s best to delay your personal care purchase until you’ve had a chance to do some research. In our world of instant gratification, this can be difficult. However, a little planning can go a long way. For instance, you need sunscreen. Before heading out, take the time to research on the internet some of the best choices for the particular product you are looking for. Visit the company’s website and read their claims first hand. Also, read any of their information regarding the ingredients.

Take a look at Sanre’s website,www.sanreorganic.com. On their website you can read about the founders’ backgrounds, as well as a list of EVERY ingredient used in their product, why it’s used, and if it’s organic. This is something that every company should be willing to disclose. If you are at all uncertain, steer clear of a product. There are typcially 1000’s of choices for you!

CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Pretty much the easiest way to tell if a product is organic is to look for a small logo that says ‘Certified Organic’ and wording that tells what company certified the product organic. Organic certification is a certification process for producers of organic skin care. However, that doesn’t mean that a truly organic product can’t be organic if it’s not certified. Certification is an expensive process to go through and often small, independent producers can’t afford to go through the process even though their product is truly made with organic products.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
Hopefully, the government will one day soon require clear, honest labeling of the personal care industry’s products. Until that day, it is up to the consumer to do what’s best for their body. That involves a little extra legwork, but in the end, it will benefit your health for years to come.

Most importantly, begin to protect babies and children immediately. They have sensitive, susceptible, and growing systems that should be taken care of. They will be protected now and will see these benefits later in life.

But remember, it’s never to late for you to start! The reduction of these chemicals in your and your family’s life will provide wonderful benefits without the dangers. SanRe welcomes you to organic and BENEFICIAL beauty.
